Pullmantur Cruises, a Spanish company, operates cruise ships and tours to exotic destinations. It is a subsidiary company of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
Pullmantur was established in 1971 as a tour operator offering landexcursions in Spain and citytours in Spain. The couple ventured into cruise cruising in 1990 when they chartered Big Red Boat, a Premier Cruises vessel. In 2000, they purchased the ship from Premier Cruises and started their own cruise business.
They grew quickly and added the former Pacific Princess Princess from Princess Cruises in 2002 to their fleet. After that, they also began to offer cruises aboard a number of other ships they had chartered from Cruise Invest.
Their fleet comprises four cruise vessels. These are Zenith, Horizon, Sovereign and Monarch.
On the 11th of June 2020, it was announced that all upcoming cruises for the Pullmantur Cruises were cancelled until November 15 and that the ships would go into cold lay-up until they could return to service again. It was a very long week before the company finally filed for reorganisation under Spanish insolvency laws on the 22nd of June, which means the end for the Pullmantur Cruises brand.
Later, it was revealed that the ships would be sold to Turkish breakers in a reorganization plan. The Monarch and Sovereign, two of the older ships, were taken to Aliaga Ship Breaking Yard, Turkey, for recycling, before being sold to Turkish shipbreakers. Horizon, a more modern vessel was laid up in Greece, instead of joining its fleet mates at Aliaga shipbreakers.
This decision is made for a variety reasons. First and foremost, the COVID-19 virus pandemic which ravaged the cruise sector made it difficult for many companies. Royal Caribbean filed for bankruptcy in Spain and reorganized, eliminating the possibility of the ships being sold to other cruise lines.
The Royal Caribbean-owned Pullmantur vessels are likely to be scrapped. This is the sad end to a very successful and long career for these ships.
It is hoped that this will bring an end to these cruise ships, and that passengers will be able find employment on other Royal Caribbean lines. This will offer them a fantastic opportunity to get employment and the chance to work with a larger cruise line than they ever dreamed.
